We have treated individuals with depression using cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for over two decades. We are consumers of the scientific literature, and frequently engage in peer consultation with other experts.
We are long-time members of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) and the Association for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (ABCT), and have attended numerous professional meetings and workshops to refine our skills.
As university professors, we have trained many clinical psychology doctoral students in the treatment of depressive disorders.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Depression
CBT treatment is the most extensively studied psychotherapy for depression and an evidence-based approach. Strong support for CBT as a treatment for depression appears in many top-tier psychological journals.
CBT not only treats depressive episodes, it also has an enduring effect. Following recovery from a depressive episode, CBT continues to keep people well even after the therapy has ended.
Our Approach to Treating Depression
CBT addresses thoughts (i.e., cognitions) and coping strategies (i.e., behaviors). Depression leads to narrowly focused thinking on personal shortcomings, regrets, and losses, along with a negative outlook for the future.
One of the goals of CBT is to help clients discover more objective, accurate, and functional ways of appraising their life circumstances to counteract biased thinking. Since depression is also associated with problematic coping and social withdrawal, CBT helps with problem-solving strategies and promotes greater engagement with mood lifting activities.
For longer-term depressions, it is important to examine maladaptive life themes or early maladaptive schemas. Examples of early maladaptive schemas include expecting to be abandoned, seeing oneself as a failure, and feeling fundamentally defective. Schemas develop in childhood and can continue into adulthood.
Often people know intellectually that their early maladaptive schemas are not true, but they feel true emotionally. Early maladaptive schemas can contribute to self-defeating behavior which perpetuates depression. A modified CBT approach called schema therapy addresses toxic early maladaptive schemas.
During your evaluation, we will make a determination as to which approach, traditional CBT or schema therapy, is more appropriate.
